Feline Arthritis

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Has your cat lost a step when it jumps? Does your cat seem unapproachable at times? It’s a strong possibility that your cat has osteoarthritis. Feline arthritis can be hard to detect but with these subtle hints, you may be able to find the cause of your cat’s discomfort. Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD), has become more common among senior cats, typically 10 or more years of age. DJD symptoms include any degenerative change in a synovial, cartilaginous, or fibrous articulation in the skeleton.

Jealous Dogs, Truth or Reality?

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

The last time you brought a date over to your place; did your dog act abnormally? Don’t be surprised because your dog is probably jealous. The strong bond that you built between you and your canine can go deeper into creating a love triangle with your significant other.

Prior to recent studies, dogs were previously believed to not harbor emotions like jealousy, embarrassment, empathy, or guilt. This is quite the contrary as Dr. Friederike Range of the University of Vienna’s neurobiology department has found that “dogs feel intense jealousy when they are unfairly treated compared with other dogs.” “Dogs show a strong aversion to inequity.” The study also involved other animals such as cats, horses, cows, and sheep. “They can suffer simple forms of many emotions we once thought only primates could experience,” says Dr. Paul Morris, psychologist at the University of Portsmouth.

Dr. Morris also found that among dog owners, almost all reported jealous behavior. The dog often tried to pry their owner away from a new lover in the early days of a relationship. Behavioral experts think that the best thing to do is keep their dog’s routine as much as possible when a new partner or child comes along to prevent jealous activity by the dog such as barking or whining.

The Kennel Club of Philadelphia will be hosting this event as they have presented dog shows for more than 125 years. If you’ve never seen dogs in High Definition TV, this is your chance to catch super crisp shots of numerous dog breeds.

The National Dog Show is increasingly becoming an American holiday tradition as nearly 20 million people tune in to see over 150 different breeds compete for best of Breed, First in Group, and the coveted Best in Show title. Tune into the National Dog Show on NBC at Noon on Thanksgiving Day, directly following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and enjoy two hours of doggie entertainment. Who knows? DNA in Dog Poop Might Get You FINED

    Friday, October 10th, 2008

Dog owners in Petah Tikva, Israel can now be fined for leaving dog waste in the streets. The city is using DNA to track owners who don’t dispose of their dog’s poop around town. Dog owners are being asked to bring their dogs in to get mouths swabbed. Why would anyone risk this?

Owners and pets added to the DNA database are eligible for pet food coupons and dog toys when they dispose droppings in specially marked bins around the city. If the programs are successful the city may make it mandatory for pet owners to provide a swab.

Personally I’m tired of walking around with a stinky poop bag in tow while I see other dog owners leaving the scene of the crime empty handed! Sign me up! Especially if it means I could get free pet supplies for doing what I already do!

    Ay Chihuahua!
    Beverly Hills Chihuahua Movie Review

    Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Beverly Hills Chihuahua Movie ReviewIn the midst of an economic meltdown you might think a movie about a spoiled Chihuahua is insensitive, but the cuteness of the film is just what the doctor ordered to keep your mind off money woes. Beverly Hills Chihuahua takes us on an adventure from pampered Beverly Hills to the land of Chihuahuas in Mexico. The live-action dogs are so hysterical it will make you want to teach your dog to talk! Drew Barrymore, the voice of high society Chloe, balances her pampered pooch side with her humor to give us a great lead character.

After reading several poor reviews I was hesitant to watch the movie, let alone buy the ticket for fear of flying tomatoes. However, I really enjoyed the movie and I’m pretty sure the kids cracking up next to me (aka the TARGET AUDIENCE) loved it too!

I hope people can look past the bad reviews and realize that the intended viewers were not movie critics and we should cut Disney some slack before we deter parents from taking their kids!

Latest Efforts by The Search Dog Foundation

    Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

EntirelyPets.com has teamed up with the Search Dog Foundation in support efforts around disaster struck areas in the United States. Since the tragedy of 9/11, Search Dog Foundation (SDF) search teams have been called upon by state agencies across the country to serve as the first responders to numerous disasters including: hurricanes, earthquakes, mud slides, train derailments and building collapses. Whether responding to a major national disaster, or one closer to home, SDF teams stand ready to serve.

Search Dog FoundationMost recently SDF canine search teams were deployed out to Chatsworth, near Los Angeles on September 12th in the rescue attempts that followed a tragic train wreck. The train wreck occurred approximately at 4:30 PST when a Metrolink commuter train collided with a freight train. Three Search Dog Foundation teams were on the scene to assist in the recovery of surviving passengers. The team searched all four cars connected to the Metrolink engine. The loss of life was tragic and devastating. The dogs did exactly what they have been taught to do and searched the area quickly and thoroughly. The dogs brought comfort to all the families involved, knowing that everything possible was being done.

September has a been a busy month for the Search Dog Foundation. Fourteen of SDF’s canines were also recently deployed in the rescue efforts following Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike. All of these rescue teams have safely returned home after canvassing neighborhoods to make sure everybody was accounted for.
