How To Put Your Dog on a Budget
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008How to Get Your Kibble’s Worth in Dog Food
Sometimes we overfeed our pets without even knowing. This not only has the potential to make obese dogs, it also can be a costly mistake if you buy expensive food! Always measure the food you give your pet to make sure you do not overfeed them.
If you think you may have an overweight dog, check out Iam’s Dog Weight Chart or see your veterinarian for additional help.

Keeping Dogs Entertained Without Breaking the Bank
Spending time with your pet is a priceless gift you can give them. When you’re not around it’s important to keep them entertained so they won’t get bored and destructive. Here are some ways to save money on toys:
(1) Don’t buy flimsy toys, some toys can’t even last a week! If your dog loves to rip things apart, get an industructive toy like the Combat Toy or Rhino Cone.
(2) Make a toy out of old socks or clothing. Even though it’s old to you, it will be new to your pet! Recycle clothing, old beanie babies and other items into new play toys for your dog.
(3) Rotate toys for your pet so they don’t become old news. Keep a couple of items out of the basket and switch them up weekly. Old toys can become new again!
Dog Healthcare on a Budget
Between vet visits and prescription medicine, dog healthcare can be cruel to your wallet. Here are some ways to scrimp on vet bills without sacrificing your dog’s health:
(1) Vaccinate at home. Vaccinations used to be sold online in bulk prices to veterinarians. Now you can get them in single-doses at almost half off what you would pay at the vets. For those hesitant to try vaccinations at home, read through our online Pet Vaccination Guide before going to the vet.
(2) Shop for Pet Medications online. Over the past few years online pet pharmacists have cut costs by going directly to the manufacturers for medication instead of through veterinarians. This allows sites to cut costs by up to 65% on medication prescribed by vets. EntirelyPets.com is proud to be a low cost leader in the pet medication industry.
(3) Do your research on Vets before taking your pet in. It doesn’t hurt to ask for rates before taking your dog in for a visit or procedure. It’s important to trust your vet, but it’s also important that you don’t get overcharged for simple visits.
Don’t Go For Broke at the Groomers
Two of the easiest things to learn that will save you tons of money are grooming your dog’s hair and cutting their nails. Grooming at home is simple and affordable with high quality clippers available online. For additional at-home grooming information, check out the Grooming Your Dog Guide. Trimming your dog’s nails is also a breeze with a pain-free Nail Grinding Kit and also Nail Trimmers. You’ll also be able to find an array of affordable, high quality shampoos by clicking here.

Place your cat on a table, on an edge closest to you and pet the cat until they’re comfortable. Show your cat a reward, such as a treat, and give the command “sit”. As you say the command, hold the reward above your cat’s head and then move it above and behind their head. When your cat tips his head back to follow the treat they will sit to keep balance. As they sit, say “sit, good sit” and give them their reward.
Hold a reward or treat in your hand and place it in front of your cat’s nose just out of the reach of their front paws. Move it back and forth with your hands in a waving motion while saying the command “wave”. As your cat reaches for the reward they will appear to be waving. Once their motion is similar to waving, give them the treat and say “good wave”.
Place your cat on a table, on an edge closest to you and pet them until they are comfortable. Show your cat the reward and give the command “up” while you hold the reward directly above your cat at their arm’s length. When your cat stands on their hind legs or haunches and reaches for the food say “up, good up” and give them their reward. Eventually your cat will respond to “up” without having to hold the reward above them.
